WE should give freely and joyfully (v. 3) but we shouldn't go into debt for the sake of giving (v. 12) - although we should be wise enough with budgeting our money that we make sure that we give our first fruits. When people give in God's way, He really truly does provide in crazy amazing ways! I always wonder if Pilate ever really got it, you know? He is such an interesting character in all of this. I hope he did! I also love 19:35 where John writes "This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account; it is presented so that you also can believe." He writes things like that often, which is good to remember- we can trust these things because real people saw it!!!Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04676160805482056168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6691752006047538203.post-89215978708302801942015-04-24T18:48:30.747-07:002015-04-24T18:48:30.747-07:00The New Living Translation says for John 17:17 &qu...The New Living Translation says for John 17:17 "Make them pure and holy by teaching them your words of truth." This reminds me of another passage that I really like and pray a lot over myself and others- Psalm 119:11 "I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." The more Word and Truth we have in us, the less room for sin. I think that is super amazing and super convicting all at the same time!Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04676160805482056168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6691752006047538203.post-55010297793415691802015-04-21T04:23:04.568-07:002015-04-21T04:23:04.568-07:00As I was reading John 13 a few things stuck out to...As I was reading John 13 a few things stuck out to me. First, when Judas leaves Jesus in verse 30, he goes into the night. Night is dark and Jesus just told his disciples that He is the light. So essentially Judas leaves the Light for the Dark. Oh that we would stay in the light! Reminds me of the old DC Talk (I think!) song, "I want to be in the light as you are in the light...". One question I had in chapter 13 is verse 29 when it says that Judas was their treasurer. I guess I never really thought about it until now but was he entrusted with the money that people gave them to support their ministry or did the disciples have "dues" of sorts? Where did their money come from? He doesn't know a bunch of theology to rationalize faith and God and Jesus but he knows what Jesus did for him- he was blind, and then he could see. So often I think Christians feel like they need to know all of the Bible before they can share about Jesus. But even more powerful than knowing the Bible is the testimony of what Jesus has done in our lives. That speaks a lot to people, too! It is sometimes hard to understand true freedom if you do not realize that you are caught up in bondage to sin. But I think once we see how sin can entangle us, we can better see how we cannot free ourselves- only Jesus can. He basically says in verse 12 that the crippled woman is healed. Not "please be healed" or "if it is Your will, God, that she be healed" but "Woman, you are healed." I crave that confidence and faith in my own life to see and experience miracles both big and small. But sometimes I have little faith. I believe this story actually happened, especially because it was carefully investigated by an educated doctor. But even if it were just a "fable," the reflective question would be, "Is my heart more like the Pharisee, feeling like I deserve the righteousness that Jesus gives, or is my heart like the woman realizing that we too fall short of God's standards and only by God's grace and unfathomable, unconditional love can we be saved through faith in his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus had ministry to large crowds, to medium sized groups (72 disciples), to small groups (12 disciples), to even a chosen few (Peter, James, and John seemed to be involved in quite a few things the others weren't). Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02072609129192751010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6691752006047538203.post-60909185779823905872015-03-17T11:31:49.812-07:002015-03-17T11:31:49.812-07:00Yeah, I think I agree that the wineskins are about...Yeah, I think I agree that the wineskins are about the Pharisees not being open to teaching they aren't familiar with. I think I fall into that trap a lot- I have my idea of what the character of God is, and when I'm encountered with something that stretches that understanding, my initial response is to reject it rather than having a teachable heart.

I also think that this chapter is great for those of us in ministry. A lot of times, we think that having a big "reach"- lots of Likes on Facebook, big numbers of participants- is the goal, but Jesus didn't minister that way. He chose and poured into a few men, and didn't seek out crowds as much as he sought relationships. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04777216669371740860noreply@blogger.com
